　　紅磚大學 

　　這個稱謂主要是有別于牛津和劍橋大學，最早是對于維多利亞時期創立于英格蘭工業城市，并于第一次世界大戰前得到大學特許的6所市立英國大學的稱呼，紅磚大學是英國最頂尖的老牌名校。 紅磚大學只是一個概稱，并沒有很明確的名單。因為一般說到紅磚大學泛指所有成立于1800年後至廿世紀初期，以中產階級平民教育為目標的中生代大學。然而有一些學校固然符合這個大分類，但是因為某些原因，在談論到這些學校本身時，我個人覺得他們不太被視很“很紅磚”的學校，總的來說，所有在1800-1959年間成立的大學都可以被泛稱作紅磚大學。

　　英國的古典大學都成立于工業革命之前，主要是以神學教育或貴族教育為起源。工業革命後開始有學校以平民教育為宗旨并成為大學，這些就是所謂的紅磚大學們。

　　老式學院制大學：12-13世紀

　　這些大學最突出的特點是它們的學院制度。 學院完全自主它們的財產、政務和內部事務，但是大學授予學位和確定能被授予學位的學生條件，學生只有被學院接受才能成為該所屬大學的學生。 舉例說，申請牛津或劍橋大學，首先要獲得大學的認可，然后再申請學院。如果沒有被學院接受你，你同樣不能被大學錄取而成為它的一員。所以只有其中一個學院接受你，你才能成為大學的學生，且這些學院并不代表科系。

　　大學聯盟：19世紀末 

　　倫敦大學(University of London，簡稱UOL)是一所由多個獨立的學院大學聯合組成的學府(聯邦制大學)，其實并沒有真正意義上的倫敦大學，這是一個大學聯盟，旗下各個學院大學都是獨立的實體，進行獨立招生，獨立頒發文憑，獨立排名。 大學旗下的學院都擁有高度的自治權，不少學院本身就是世界知名大學。全英國有大約5%的學生都在倫敦的學院中學習過。倫敦大學主要行政辦公室位于倫敦布盧姆茨伯里區的羅素廣場的議事大樓之內，該處還建有圖書館和校長的住所。 比如倫敦大學學院、倫敦大學國王學院等有名的英國名校都是倫敦大學聯盟下的。

　　平板玻璃大學 

　　平板玻璃大學(plate glass university)是指英國在1960年代關于高等教育的《羅賓斯報告》發表以后成立的大學。 這個名稱是來源于它們的現代建筑設計，在鋼或混凝土結構中廣泛使用平板玻璃，與以維多利亞建筑風格為主的紅磚大學和更古老的古典大學形成鮮明對照。過去，新大學是平板玻璃大學的同義詞，不過從1992年以后，新大學傾向于指1992后大學(Post-1992 university，主要是過去的多科技術學院polytechnic升格)。

　　威爾士大學聯盟 

　　英國威爾士大學(The University of Wales)是一所聯合大學(大學聯盟)，于1893年根據英國皇家憲章成立，由10家威爾士大學學院組成并承擔主要教學和科研任務。 威爾士大學則是其分校和英國國內外數十所成員學院的學位證書頒發的認證和管理機構，在國內外有較大的影響。

　　新興大學 

　　現在我們所謂的“新大學”(NEW UNIVERSITIES)多指成立於八十年代之后的大學。這些大學是英國教育政策改變走向廣設大學的結果。他們的前身多為理工專業學院，而數量上占英國目前一百多所大學的半數，這些年輕的大學在某些新興或單一領域上有時有很出色的表現，但是在整體聲譽上多半還是不如傳統大學們，這可能是因為成為大學的歷史還短的關系。
